Dodge EV takes to the streets

Dodge EV takes to the streets

While a lot of the legwork was done for them by Lotus, we still have to give Chrysler a little credit for getting an electric vehicle prototype on the road so quickly. When we first saw the Dodge EV a couple of months ago, it looked like it was ready to roll, with a Tesla-like blend of Lotus platform and electric powerpack. Soon after we heard that the car was likely to make it to production, with a delivery date that would challenge the Chevrolet Volt. While it had appeared that Chrysler was way behind its domestic rivals in developing an electric car, we know that through their GEM subsidiary, Chrysler has actually accumulated a lot of EV expertise and become the nation's leading electric car seller in the process.

The Dodge EV is essentially a Lotus Europa, but uses lithium batteries and a 268 hp electric motor in place of the standard 2.0L four cylinder engine and transmission. It promises a range of 150-200 miles and a 0-60 time of under 5 seconds. It's a full-blown, plug-in EV, just like the Tesla Roadster, and should require a 4-hour recharge from a 220V outlet or 8 hours on a 110. To help launch Chrysler's new ENVI electric car division, the Dodge EV has been traveling the show circuit, but today we spotted it at one of our favorite local cruise-ins.

It attracted quite a crowd. Not surprisingly, many folks at the show mistook it for a Lotus until they saw the Dodge badges. Even then a lot of people figured it was some type of joint venture between the two firms. Most were amazed to learn the car might be in Dodge showrooms by 2010. Try as we might we couldn't wrestle the keys from the Chrysler reps. Hopefully the car and the company make it through our current economic crisis so we can sample one when they hit the streets.

Intel and Abarth hook up on Powerplay Extreme gaming desktop

Intel and Abarth hook up on Powerplay Extreme gaming desktop

As Fiat's in-house tuning arm, Abarth stands for high performance and unique design. The firm hopes to have hit on both of these qualities with its latest adventure in the art of co-branding, the new Powerplay Extreme gaming desktop. The crew definitely got the unique design part down, with a soaring, bridge-like truss holding a giant fan at the very top of the inner workings of the computer, which is powered by Intel's latest and most powerful chip ever, the Core i7 Extreme.

This new pint-sized desktop machine will be launched to kick off Intel's new "Friday Night Game", which is an Electronic Sports League sanctioned event that pits elite gamers from 30 different countries against each other. As far as the actual hardware goes, we see the expected firewire and USB ports along with an external serial port for terabytes of fun. The exposed motherboard sports a slew of heatsinks and LED-colored fans to keep things cool. Plus, it controls a Blue-ray/HD DVD player and, of course, a couple of CD\DVD burners. We're sure it all runs on an Intel chipset, but there aren't any details yet on the RAM or hard disk space. The best part? How 'bout that big red Start Engine power button?

Jeep launches special edition of Patriot: Patriot S-Limited (UK)

Jeep is attempting to stir up sales of the slow-selling Patriot SUV by launching a new S-Limited spec level.

The Jeep Patriot S-Limited gets a chrome-edged grille, rear parking sensors, and a chunky bodykit with faux-underbody protection. Inside there is leather upholstery, including leather and Alcantara door inserts.

The Patriot S-Limited is only available with the 168bhp 2.4 litre petrol engine and costs £19,810. That’s £1815 more than the next most expensive petrol-powered Patriot – though the price does include metallic paint. Only 100 units will be made.

it has released images of its Embolado Concept. Penned by Luca Serafini — an Italian design student — the Embolado was inspired by the Spanish festival, Toro Embolado. “The choice of the name was the first step towards the creation of this concept,” says Serafini. The festival of Toro Embolado involves putting flammable material on a bull’s horns, lighting them on fire and then releasing the bull into the streets, which sounds more akin to the Lamborghinis of yesteryear.

While there has been no official word as to whether the Embolado will make production — Lamborghini has yet to even announce at which auto show it will debut the concept — the car could indicate the future styling for an entry-level Lamborghini. Giving further credence to the design exercise is the fact that Serafini has also designed a Superleggera version.
